Sustainability & Community Impact
Our Philosophy: Tanggung Jawab (Responsibility)
For Borneo Orangutan Voyages and our parent company, Juara Holding Group, sustainability is not a marketing term; it is the fundamental principle that guides every decision we make. We operate under the Indonesian philosophy of Tanggung Jawab—a deep sense of responsibility for our actions and their impact on the environment, our community, and our guests. We believe that the privilege of guiding visitors through the pristine environment of Tanjung Puting National Park comes with an absolute obligation to protect it for generations to come. Our commitment is woven into every aspect of our voyages.
Environmental Commitments: Protecting a Global Treasure
Our environmental strategy is focused on minimizing our footprint, contributing to conservation, and actively restoring the ecosystem.
- Carbon Neutral Voyages: We acknowledge the environmental cost of travel. Therefore, we partner with the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, a world-leading REDD+ project located right in Central Kalimantan, to offset 100% of the carbon emissions generated by our guests’ flights and boat travel. Your journey with us is certified carbon neutral.
- Zero Single-Use Plastics: We have a strict zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics on all our voyages. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles, and all supplies are provisioned using reusable containers. This policy extends to our entire supply chain.
- Comprehensive Waste Management: We adhere to a rigorous ‘pack-in, pack-out’ protocol. All waste generated on our voyages is carefully sorted and transported back to Pangkalan Bun for proper recycling and disposal. Nothing is left behind in the national park.
- River & Marine Health: Our partner vessels use modern, well-maintained engines to minimize fuel and noise pollution. We use only biodegradable, phosphate-free cleaning products and soaps to protect the delicate river ecosystem. We also contribute a portion of our revenue to local NGOs dedicated to cleaning the Sekonyer River.
Community Empowerment: A Shared Future
Sustainable tourism must deliver tangible, long-term benefits to the local communities who are the primary stewards of the environment. We are committed to being a positive force for economic and social development.
- Prioritizing Local Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground team—including our boat crews, chefs, and local guides—are hired from villages in and around the Tanjung Puting area. We provide fair wages, comprehensive benefits including BPJS insurance, and continuous professional training.
- Supporting Local Economies: We source nearly all of our fresh produce, ingredients, and supplies from local markets in Kumai and Pangkalan Bun, ensuring that tourism revenue directly supports local farmers and merchants.
- Championing Traditional Crafts: We facilitate respectful and non-transactional visits to local communities, and we partner directly with artisans in villages like Pasir Panjang to provide a market for their ethically produced handicrafts, ensuring they receive 100% of the profits.
- The Juara Community Fund: A percentage of the revenue from every voyage is allocated to the Juara Holding Group Community Fund. This fund invests in local education by providing scholarships for promising students and supports vital healthcare initiatives in remote villages that lack access to basic medical services.
Ethical Wildlife Encounters
The well-being of the orangutans and other wildlife is our paramount concern. We strictly adhere to all guidelines set by the Balai Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting and international best practices for ethical wildlife tourism. Our expert guides, whose credentials you can see on our Our Team page, are trained to manage every encounter with the utmost respect, ensuring a safe distance is maintained and the animals’ natural behaviors are never disturbed. Choosing Borneo Orangutan Voyages means choosing a partner in the long-term protection of this irreplaceable wilderness.
